2 Days Trip from Marrakech to Essaouira

It’s true what they say, sometimes the best impression is the quick escape. My 2 days in Essaouira from Marrakech was just that: a welcome reprieve from the scorch of the Red City and the maddening bustle of its souks to the cool, atmospheric charm of the Atlantic coast. Here’s a small taste of what made this short trip so memorable.

Day 1: Red Walls to Ocean Breeze

We exited Marrakech just as the sun started to rise behind us. It’s a 2.5- to 3-hour drive to Essaouira, but the scenery on the journey meant it didn’t feel like it. The changing vistas — from the arid plains to the rolling hills of argan trees — were a foreshadowing of more beauty to come.

Among the most curious and fun sights? Goats climbing argan trees! We were so thunderstruck, we had to pull over to take a picture — it was that surreal.

It was late morning when we made it to Essaouira. It was quite the contrast from Marrakech. Suddenly everything slowed: Cooler air, sea breeze, the sound of waves.

After arriving at our riad near the medina, we strolled through old city walls. The medina of Essaouira is relaxed, colorful and a snap to figure out. Every corner felt like a postcard, with white-and-blue houses, art galleries and craft shops along the boulevards. We had lunch by the harbor — fresh grilled fish and seafood, almost on the boats.

We spent the afternoon walking on the beach. The addition of camel rides, kitesurfers and vast open skies created a dreamy coastal feel. We ended the night with mint tea from a rooftop terrace as the sun sank out of sight.

Day 2: Discover, Eat and Take It Nice and Slow

It was pure heaven falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the ocean waves and seagulls. We had breakfast at the riad and then continued our adventures. The ramparts, cannons and sweeping views of the ocean gave us an opportunity to appreciate the old fortress side of the city.

We went to some art galleries and bought some local souvenirs — handmade jewelry, argan oil, and gorgeously carved wooden crafts. Essaouira is also famous for its music and although we didn’t visit when there was a festival going on, we heard live Gnawa music in the streets, contributing a memorable rhythm to the ambiance.

We had one last seafood meal by the port and a final stroll along the beach before we headed back to Marrakech.

Final Thoughts

Essaouira seemed like the best antidote to the intensity of Marrakech. It is slower, mellower and heart-stoppingly peaceful, but still rich in culture and seduction. Whether it’s food, art or simply lying by the sea that interests you, Essaouira has something to offer everyone.

So sweet, and so short, was this 2-day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira. If you’re in Morocco and have a few days to spare, look past the glitz and don’t overlook this smaller coastal gem.
